Climate and nature

The climate in Germany is temperate. Typical are cold, often rainy winters and warm summers that can reach peaks of over 30 degrees Celsius. Distinct seasonal changes characterize the country - spring, summer, autumn, and winter differ clearly.

Depending on the region, different climatic conditions are evident: In the west and north, the sea has a moderating effect, so winters are milder and summers cooler. In the east and south, a more pronounced continental climate prevails with hotter summers, colder winters, and greater temperature fluctuations.

For international professionals, the climate in Germany may require an adjustment period, especially when coming from regions with constantly warm temperatures.

Economic significance

Despite limited natural resources, Germany is among the world's leading industrialized nations. Significant lignite deposits and smaller deposits of iron, copper, nickel, uranium, and natural gas exist, but economic strength is based primarily on technology, innovation, and highly qualified industry.

The country relies heavily on qualified international professionals, particularly in the fields of natural sciences, technology, and applied sciences. Healthcare also plays an important role, as demographic change is leading to an increasing demand for healthcare professionals.

Education and universities

Germany enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide for scientific research and excellence in higher education. Particularly noteworthy is the high proportion of international students who come from non-English-speaking countries. Approximately 60 percent of universities are state-funded, which contributes to comparatively low tuition fees. The German higher education system combines theoretical training with practice-oriented degree programs, making it attractive to international students.

Labor market and skilled worker demand

The aging society is leading to a declining number of young workers. Therefore, the importance of international workers is growing. Skilled workers from abroad are firmly integrated into the labor market in many areas, particularly in technology, engineering, and healthcare.

Medicine and healthcare

Healthcare professions hold a high status in Germany and are among the best-paid occupations. With approximately 68,000 foreign healthcare professionals, Germany is among the world's leading recipient countries in the healthcare sector.

The most common countries of origin for international physicians are currently:

  • Syria: 7,042
  • Romania: 4,682
  • Austria: 3,036
  • Greece: 2,971
  • Russia: 3,110
  • Turkey: 3,169 (German Medical Association, 2024)

In addition to professionals in human medicine, specialists in dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and other healthcare sectors are also increasingly in demand.

Migration and immigration

Germany has experienced strong immigration for years. In 2024, the net migration balance was 1.46 million people - the highest figure in the country's history (Federal Statistical Office 2024).
